The easiest way to understand what is important to some one else is to ask them what they mean and to listen carefully to what they have to say. The goal of effective communication should be mutual understanding and finding a solution that satisfies all parties, not "winning" the argument or "being right" Strong relationships require all parties to openly express their feelings and positions on all matters pertinent to the relationship. Assuming that the other person understands us and will give us when we need it without asking for it is not very realistic. When people fail to express whatever is on their mind, it can get in the way of building an satisfying relationship. It is therefore important to create an atmosphere where everyone can express their feelings when they need to. Addressing issues and problems right away will improve and strengthen a relationship. So what can you do? -Accept that other people cannot read your mind -Improve your communication skills by reading useful books on the subject -Define and explain the problem -Talk about what you and the other person(s) have experienced. Listen respectfully and non-judgementally. -Decide what you can do to meet each other half-way -Break this goal down into small steps -Engage in meaningful activities that will strengthen your relationship -Ask for help from an experienced stress relief or relationship consultant Respectful communication is the key to a lasting, supportive relationship. In order to create a more balanced relationship, people should treat each other with respect. Forming judgements based on unfounded facts and prejudice will be counter-productive.
